When you walk down the cobble streets in Italy you can’t help but notice water bottles near doors, gates and sometimes even windows. In actuality the house we purchased in Arona, had water bottles at the gates when we purchased it and I asked the owner why and she said to stop dogs from peeing there.
My thoughts were how can water bottles stop dogs from peeing in the area they are placed? It has to be some sort of superstition because we know Italy is full of superstitions. But seeing these bottles all over the place I’ve had to do some research to see if there is any validity in this theory.
It is known that male dogs and cats pee to mark their territory by peeing on lampposts, fire hydrants, benches, car wheels, trees, flower pots, gates, doors and pretty much anything. Therefore, when it is hot out that pee can be an unpleasant stinky smell which is annoying but also not good for our health.
From my research, there are two theories:
In the day, the glare of the water in the sun will scare animals away to pee somewhere else
At night, the reflections of animal’s eyes are refracted through the prisms of the water in the plastic. This gives off a sense that there are other animals in the area and therefore deters the animal from peeing there
This practice is used throughout Italy and the Italians I’ve asked about why they put water bottles near their house say it is to stop the dogs and cats from peeing on their property and they swear it works.
There are however no scientific studies that proves this effectiveness and the experts state using sulfur dust which is yellow in colour, can be effective because the animals can’t tolerate the smell. But the use of sulfur is prohibited as it can be dangerous to the animals, therefore using plastic bottles with water is the best option.
If you are having issues with peeing dogs and cats, give the plastic bottle theory a try.

Perché le Bottiglie D'acqua
Quando si cammina per le strade acciottolate d'Italia non si può fare a meno di notare le bottiglie d'acqua vicino a porte, cancelli e talvolta anche finestre. In realtà la casa che abbiamo acquistato ad Arona, aveva bottiglie d'acqua ai cancelli quando l'abbiamo acquistata e ho chiesto alla proprietaria perché e lei ha detto di impedire ai cani di fare pipì lì.
I miei pensieri erano: come possono le bottiglie d'acqua impedire ai cani di fare pipì nell'area in cui sono posizionate? Deve trattarsi di una sorta di superstizione perché sappiamo che l'Italia è piena di superstizioni. Ma vedendo queste bottiglie dappertutto, ho dovuto fare qualche ricerca per vedere se c'è qualche validità in questa teoria.
È noto che cani e gatti maschi fanno pipì per marcare il loro territorio facendo pipì su lampioni, idranti, panchine, ruote di auto, alberi, vasi di fiori, cancelli, porte e praticamente qualsiasi cosa. Pertanto, quando fa caldo quella pipì può essere un odore sgradevole e puzzolente che è fastidioso ma anche non fa bene alla nostra salute.
Dalla mia ricerca, ci sono due teorie:
Di giorno, il bagliore dell'acqua al sole spaventerà gli animali per farli fare pipì da qualche altra parte
Di notte, i riflessi degli occhi degli animali vengono rifratti attraverso i prismi dell'acqua nella plastica. Questo dà la sensazione che ci siano altri animali nell'area e quindi dissuade l'animale dal fare pipì lì
Questa pratica è usata in tutta Italia e gli italiani a cui ho chiesto perché mettono le bottiglie d’acqua vicino a casa dicono che è per impedire a cani e gatti di fare pipì nella loro proprietà e giurano che funziona.
Non ci sono però studi scientifici che dimostrino questa efficacia e gli esperti affermano che l'uso di polvere di zolfo, di colore giallo, può essere efficace perché gli animali non ne tollerano l'odore. Ma l'uso di zolfo è vietato in quanto può essere pericoloso per gli animali, quindi l'uso di bottiglie di plastica con acqua è l'opzione migliore.
Se hai problemi con cani e gatti che fanno pipì, prova la teoria della bottiglia di plastica.
