Today my good friend Luciano showed me this hidden painting on the outside wall of the church, which is a fresco dating back to the old church. What amazes me is that I've walked Mercurago hill and looked at the church so many times but I've never seen this beautiful part of the church's history. Reminder for us to look for the hidden gems ❣️
Oggi il mio caro amico Luciano mi ha mostrato questo dipinto nascosto sulla parete esterna della chiesa, che è un affresco risalente alla vecchia chiesa. Quello che mi stupisce è che ho camminato sulla collina di Mercurago e ho guardato la chiesa così tante volte, ma non ho mai visto questa bellissima parte della storia della chiesa. Ci ricorda di cercare le gemme nascoste ❣️
St. George Church is located on the hills of Mercurago which is a Hamlet in the municipality of Arona. It sits about 250 meters above sea level and is near Lagoni di Mercurago Natural Park. The first news about the town dates back to the 10th century and it was an independent municipality until1928, the year it was abolished and became a hamlet of Arona.
The church is made up of two sections and first appears in documents in 1351. The back part of the church is ancient and made up of today’s presbytery, the bell tower and the sacristy. This part of the church dates back to the 15th century however the complex structure suggests various construction phases which probably took 1 ½ centuries to complete. The tower is of medieval origin and is perhaps older than 1351 and the upper part of the bell tower was built in the 18th century.
The front part, has a rectangular nave and dates back to the 16th century, while the vault is barrel vaulted with lunettes. In 1884-85 the structure was enlarged with an octagonal body on the facade, by the architect Ercole Marietti. The internal decorations in neo-Renaissance style, carried out by the "Scuola Beato Angelico" based on a design by Professor Coccoli, date back to 1932.

Chiesa San Giorgio Mercurago
La Chiesa di San Giorgio si trova sulle colline di Mercurago che è una frazione del comune di Arona. Si trova a circa 250 metri sul livello del mare e si trova nei pressi del Parco Naturale dei Lagoni di Mercurago. Le prime notizie del paese risalgono al X secolo e fu comune autonomo fino al 1928, anno in cui fu soppresso e divenne frazione di Arona.
La chiesa è composta da due sezioni e compare per la prima volta nei documenti nel 1351. La parte posteriore della chiesa è antica e costituita dall'odierno presbiterio, dal campanile e dalla sacrestia. Questa parte della chiesa risale al XV secolo ma la struttura complessa fa pensare a diverse fasi costruttive la cui realizzazione durò probabilmente un secolo e mezzo. La torre è di origine medievale ed è forse più antica del 1351 e la parte superiore del campanile è stata costruita nel XVIII secolo.
La parte anteriore, a navata rettangolare , risale al XVI secolo, mentre la volta è a botte con lunette. Nel 1884-85 la struttura fu ampliata con un corpo ottagonale in facciata, ad opera dell'architetto Ercole Marietti. Le decorazioni interne in stile neorinascimentale, effettuate dalla "Scuola Beato Angelico" su disegno del professor Coccoli, risalgono al 1932.
