Palm Sunday is the week before Easter and is a feast that changes the date it is celebrated each year based on the dates when Passover occurs. Easter is determined by the lunar Calendar and is celebrated on the first Sunday after the paschal full moon after March 21st, the calendrical spring equinox. In the Catholic Church (part of Western Christianity), we can celebrate Easter as early as March 22nd or as late as April 25th.
Palm Sunday is the day Christians remember Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, where he came into the city mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden. The name “Palm” comes from the palm branches the people waved as they greeted Jesus. Told by John 12:13 – “So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” During Jesus’ time, it was customary to lay palm branches or even clothes in front of people who were owed a great amount of respect.
Today on Palm Sunday, the faithful receive palm branches that could be even woven into small crosses, as we walk into church. Something I learned today as I’ve done the research is that if we don’t want the “Blessed Palms” any more we have to treat them with reverence, meaning if we want to dispose of them, we must either bury or burn them. We can easily return them to our parish and they will burn them on “Shrove Tuesday” to make the ashes the next day, Ash Wednesday.
Palm Sunday starts the beginning of Holy Week or the seven days leading up to Easter which includes these important events:
Spy Wednesday (Holy Wednesday) – commemorates the Bargain of Judas as a clandestine spy among the disciples
Last Supper or Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday) – the feast that marks the beginning of Paschal Triduum and commemorates the Washing of the Feet (Maundy) by Jesus of the Apostles ad the Last Supper of Jesus
Passion of Jesus or Good Friday (Holy Friday) – the day that commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary (Golgotha)
Great Saturday (Holy Saturday) – For Western Christians, this concludes Holy Week which is the last week of Lent with Christ’s death and descent into hell on Holy Saturday
Christians believe Jesus rested in death form 3 pm on Good Friday until before Dawn on Sunday morning, the day of his resurrection from death or Easter Sunday.
As a little girl I went to some of these commemorative special days but as an adult I haven’t. Therefore, this year I will try to get to the special masses or at minimum provide a blog on each of the important events. Today I participated in Palm Sunday mass.

Domenica delle Palme
La Domenica delle Palme è la settimana prima di Pasqua ed è una festa che cambia la data in cui viene celebrata ogni anno in base alle date in cui ricorre la Pasqua ebraica. La Pasqua è determinata dal calendario lunare e si celebra la prima domenica dopo la luna piena pasquale dopo il 21 marzo, l'equinozio di primavera del calendario. Nella Chiesa cattolica (parte del cristianesimo occidentale), possiamo celebrare la Pasqua già dal 22 marzo o fino al 25 aprile.
La Domenica delle Palme è il giorno in cui i cristiani ricordano l'ingresso trionfale di Gesù a Gerusalemme, dove entrò in città montato su un asino, su un puledro, puledro di una bestia da soma. Il nome "Palma" deriva dai rami di palma che la gente agitava mentre salutava Gesù. Raccontato da Giovanni 12:13 – "Allora presero rami di palme e gli uscirono incontro, gridando: "Osanna! Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore, il re d'Israele!" Al tempo di Gesù era consuetudine deporre rami di palma o addirittura vestiti davanti a persone che avevano un grande rispetto.
Oggi, Domenica delle Palme, i fedeli ricevono rami di palma che potrebbero anche essere intrecciati in piccole croci, mentre entriamo in chiesa. Una cosa che ho imparato oggi, mentre facevo la ricerca, è che se non vogliamo più le "Palme Benedette" dobbiamo trattarle con riverenza, il che significa che se vogliamo smaltirle, dobbiamo seppellirle o bruciarle. Possiamo facilmente restituirli alla nostra parrocchia e loro li bruceranno il "martedì grasso" per fare le ceneri il giorno dopo, il mercoledì delle ceneri.
La Domenica delle Palme inizia l'inizio della Settimana Santa o i sette giorni che precedono la Pasqua che include questi importanti eventi:
Giorno del Tradimento o Mercoledì Santo – commemora il Patto di Giuda come spia clandestina tra i discepoli
Ultima Cena o Giovedì Santo – la festa che segna l'inizio del Triduo Pasquale e commemora la Lavanda dei Piedi da parte di Gesù degli Apostoli e l'Ultima Cena di Gesù
Passione di Gesù o Venerdì Santo – il giorno che commemora la crocifissione di Gesù e la sua morte al Calvario (Golgota)
Grande Sabato o Sabato Santo – Per i cristiani occidentali, questo conclude la Settimana Santa, che è l'ultima settimana di Quaresima, con la morte di Cristo e la discesa agli inferi il Sabato Santo
I cristiani credono che Gesù si sia riposato nella morte dalle 15:00 del Venerdì Santo fino a prima dell'alba della domenica mattina, il giorno della sua risurrezione dalla morte o Domenica di Pasqua.
Quando ero giovane, ho partecipato ad alcuni di questi giorni speciali commemorativi, ma da adulta non l'ho fatto. Pertanto, quest'anno cercherò di arrivare alle messe speciali o almeno di fornire un blog su ciascuno degli eventi importanti. Oggi sono andato alla messa della Domenica delle Palme.
Buona Domenica delle Palme a tutti. Vivi la vita bene, sempre, perché è Gesù che è morto sulla croce per i peccati del mondo intero, per noi per avere la nostra meravigliosa vita sulla terra!
