Maranello is a municipality in the province of Modena and the Italian region Emilia-Romagna. It is located 18 km south of the city of Modena and has a population just over 17,000. Before becoming the town of Maranello it was a Medieval settlement centered on its Castle.
The Castle, which sits above the town, is of very ancient order but without documentation dates are not clear. Remains on the Castle grounds and next to the old church of St. Blaise show that they are of Medieval times. However, in 1501 a massive earthquake shook the area and demolished a large portion of the fortress. The Castle was rebuilt to its current state, together with the surrounding buildings.
For centuries the parish office, primary school and municipal offices were held in the Castle only moving down towards the plain in the early 20th century. The Castle remained under the lordship of the Calcagnini family from 1464 until the Unification of Italy and is still in private ownership.
However, it wasn’t until 1943 that the town of Maranello got its fame. Enzo Ferrari, a former salesman and Alfa Romeo driver moved his car construction operations to Maranello. Enzo Ferrari was born in Modena in 1898 and worked for his family’s carpentry business and then during World War I served in the Italian Army. His father Alfredo and older brother Alfredo Jr, died in 1916 as a result of a widespread flu outbreak. Enzo became severely sick of the 1918 flu pandemic and was discharged from the Italian service.
In 1920, Enzo joined the Alfa Romeo racing team and won his first race in 1923. He continued to drive until 1932 when he retired after the birth of his son Alfredo (Dino). However, he had founded Scuderia Ferrari in 1929 as a division of Alfa Romeo and he built a team of superstar drivers. During this time, the prancing horse emblem appeared on his teams’ cars. He parted ways with Alfa in 1939. Enzo raced two cars in the Mille Miglia in 1940 but with World War II the factory was forced to take on war production.
In 1947, Enzo started making cars bearing his name and Ferrari S.p.A. was founded. He decided to battle the dominating Alfa Romeos with a race team of his own and in 1952 won his first championship. In the 1957 Mille Miglia, one of his cars blew a tire and killed the driver and co-driver as well as nine spectators, five of whom were children. Originally, he and the tire manufacturer were charged with manslaughter, but charges were dismissed in 1961 as the tire blew due to hitting something on the road.
In 1969, Ferrari sold 50% of the company to Fiat with the caveat he would have 100% control of the racing division. Enzo Ferrari won 8 constructors’ championships and 9 drivers’ championships before he died in 1988. Enzo was married to Laura Garello from 1923 until her death in 1978. Their son Alfredo (Dino) died of muscular dystrophy in 1956. Enzo had a second son Piero with mistress Lina Lardi however he didn’t adopt him until after Laura’s death and Piero Lardi Ferrari is vice chairman of the company and owns 10% share of it.
The museum opened its doors as the Ferrari Gallery on February 18, 1990. The anniversary of Enzo’s birth and a year and a half after his death. It became the Prancing Horse museum in 1995, and renamed Museo Ferrari in 2011. During our visit we explored the amazing history of both racing and street cars but also took a bus tour of the factory and race track. If you love Ferrari’s then a visit to this museum is a must.

Maranello è un comune italiano di abitanti della provincia di Modena e dell'Emilia-Romagna. Si trova a 18 km a sud della città di Modena e conta una popolazione di poco superiore ai 17.000 abitanti. Prima di diventare il comune di Maranello era un insediamento medievale incentrato sul suo Castello.

Durante la nostra visita abbiamo esplorato l'incredibile storia delle auto da corsa e stradali, ma abbiamo anche fatto un tour in autobus della fabbrica e della pista. Se amate la Ferrari, allora una visita a questo museo è d'obbligo.
