It is a short 15 minute walk on the Stresa promenade to Lido di Carciano, which is a beachfront where you see lots of boats anchored in the harbour. At the moment I'm living in an apartment overlooking the Lido and it is beautiful. It's hard to believe that in the early 1900's this location was the jewel of the area. It held a wonderful beachfront, floating spa, restaurant suspended high above the lake by stilts. Si tratta di una breve passeggiata di 15 minuti sul lungomare di Stresa fino al Lido di Carciano, che è un lungomare dove si vedono molte barche ancorate nel porto. Al momento abito in un appartamento con vista sul Lido ed è bellissimo. Difficile credere che nei primi anni del 1900 questa località fosse il gioiello della zona. Ospitava una meravigliosa spa galleggiante di fronte alla spiaggia, un ristorante sospeso in alto sopra il lago da palafitte. Today it looks so different...Below is a video I took and some photos. We found out after I took the video that the 2 helicopters pick up and bring heavy items to the small islands when trucks can't go there. Pretty cool to watch.

The Lido Hotel was once the best hotel of this area and still holds a four star rating. However the surroundings are not as pristine as they once were as you can see from the video below the derelict home that used to be a mansion.

Because of this Lido the town of Stresa became a sought after vacation spot of European Nobility. With this notoriety it brought attention to the mountain above, the Mottarone. A picturesque peak overlooking Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. However the trek to get there was torturous. In 1887 capital was collected to build a railway however it was determined it wasn't enough to even start and the project was scrapped.
In the early 1900s electric traction was introduced and with the help of the Borromeo family the Mottarone Railway Company was established in 1908 and the inaugural train ride (Ferrovia) from Stresa to Mottarone was on July 12, 1911. The rail line closed in 1963 when it was replaced by roadways and buses, and in 1970 the Alpino-Mottarone cable car.
On the boardwalk in Stresa there are a couple of paintings on the bricks depicting pictures of the Ferrovia, and there is also a game that children can play "Il Gioco della Ferrovia".
Per questo Lido la cittadina di Stresa e divenuta un ambito luogo di villeggiatura della nobiltà europea. Con questa notorietà ha richiamato l'attenzione sul monte sovrastante, il Mottarone. Una vetta pittoresca che si affaccia sul Lago di Lucerna in Svizzera. Tuttavia il viaggio per arrivarci è stato tortuoso. Nel 1887 fu raccolto il capitale per costruire una ferrovia, ma fu deciso che non era nemmeno abbastanza per iniziare e il progetto fu demolito.
Agli inizi del 1900 hanno introdotta la trazione elettrica e con l'aiuto della famiglia Borromeo nel 1908 hanno costituita la Società Ferroviaria del Mottarone e il 12 luglio 1911 hanno inaugurata la corsa in treno (Ferrovia) da Stresa al Mottarone. La linea ferroviaria e chiuse nel 1963 quando fu sostituito da strade e autobus e nel 1970 la funivia Alpino-Mottarone.
Sulla passerella di Stresa ci sono un paio di dipinti sui mattoni raffiguranti quadri della Ferrovia, e c'è anche un gioco che i bambini possono fare "Il Gioco della Ferrovia".
Mottarone is a mountain in the Western Alps of Piemonte with an elevation of 1,492 meters. It is in the territory of Stresa, between Lago Orta and Lago Maggiore. Sci Club Mottarone was established in 1909 and in January 1935 the first giant slalom racing occurred. Today there are 21 trails with five ski lifts. Mottarone is also well know for it's production of cheese and the most renowned the Toma Del Mottarone. The Stresa-Alpino-Mottarone is an aerial tramway, a form of cable line which cabins are suspended from a fixed cable and hauled by a separate cable to which they are permanently attached. Cabins shuffle backwards and frontwards instead of running in a continuous loop. The Stresa-Mottarone line had two separate sections, each with two cabins, and passengers would change at mid-point in Alpino station.
Due to COVID-19 the cable car didn't operate until April 26, 2021, and even when it started working, luckily it didn't host the 47 people capacity due to COVID protocols. On May 23, 2021 at 12:22 pm as a cabin was ascending on the line's upper section, from Alpino to Mottarone, the haulage cable snapped and careered until it collided with a pylon, then fell about 180 feet before tumbling down the steep mountain slope. 14 of the 15 people on-board died, which made this Italy's second deadliest cable car incident (caution, photo's on this link may be traumatic to view).
Il Mottarone è una montagna delle Alpi Occidentali del Piemonte con un'altitudine di 1.492 metri. Si trova nel territorio di Stresa, tra il Lago d'Orta e il Lago Maggiore. Lo Sci Club Mottarone fu fondato nel 1909 e nel gennaio 1935 si svolgono le prime gare di slalom gigante. Oggi ci sono 21 piste con cinque impianti di risalita. Il Mottarone è noto anche per la produzione di formaggi e per la più rinomata la Toma del Mottarone. La Stresa-Alpino-Mottarone è una funivia, in cui le cabine sono sospese a un cavo fisso e trainate da un cavo separato a cui sono fissate in modo permanente. Le cabine si spostano avanti e indietro invece di correre a ciclo continuo. La linea Stresa-Mottarone prevedeva due tratte separate, ciascuna con due cabine, ed i passeggeri avrebbero effettuato il cambio a metà corsa nella stazione di Alpino.
A causa del COVID-19 la funivia non ha funzionato fino al 26 aprile 2021 e, anche quando ha iniziato a funzionare, fortunatamente non ha ospitato la capienza di 47 persone a causa dei protocolli COVID. Il 23 maggio 2021 alle 12:22 mentre una cabina stava salendo nella parte alta della linea, dall'Alpino al Mottarone, il cavo di trasporto si è spezzato. È andato in carreggiata fino a scontrarsi con un traliccio, quindi è caduto per circa 180 piedi prima di precipitare giù per la ripida montagna pendenza. 14 delle 15 persone a bordo sono morte, è il secondo incidente in funivia più mortale d'Italia (attenzione, le foto su questo link potrebbero essere traumatiche da visualizzare).
Below is a video of what once was the vibrant beach where the infinity pool still sits eerily empty, the funivia (cable car) station is desolate, and if you look closely cobwebs reside where there once splendor. One year later, on May 23, 2022 there was a moving ceremony on Lago Maggiore for the Anniversary of the crash.
