Lake Orta is located west of Lake Maggiore, Piedmont in Northern Italy, near the Swiss border and is nestled among rocky hills and dark green forest. Until the 16th century it was called Lago di San Guilio after Saint Julius the patron saint of the region.
One of the smallest and lesser-known northern lakes it has a width of 13.4 km (8.3 mi) and length of 2.5 km (1.6 mi) with a surface area of 18.2 km² (7 sq mi).
The shores around the lake have beautiful small villages, ancient villages and harbours that were once full of fishermen. Today it is a destination for tourists to enjoy relaxation or water sports as well as peaceful walks in nature. The ancient village of Orta San Giulio is ready to receive you in all it’s glory.
The village dates back to Roman times when it was associated with the Bishops of Novara from the 6th to 18th century. With it’s Medieval and baroque style buildings it makes for a pleasant walk until you get into the heart of the village in Piazza Motta. Here you get an incredible view of San Giulio Island and boats to get you across for 5 Euros. You can continue to walk past the piazza and you will walk into lush green paths, with incredible scenery of the lake.

Like most towns in Italy, you can sit down for a meal at many of the amazing restaurants in the piazza. There are also many little shops you can pick up a souvenir.
Lago d'Orta

Saint Julius Island
The island got its name from Saint Julius who fled from Greece to escape prosecution because he built Christian churches to fight paganism. When he couldn’t find a boat to cross the island it is said he stretched out his cloak on the water and walked over it until he reached the island. Legend has it he expelled snakes and dragons from the island when he arrived and built his 100th church which is now the Basilica of Saint Julius. His relics are preserved inside the 12th century structure built right by the water.

Located in the middle of Lake Orta, Saint Julius Island it is home to Mater Ecclesiae Abbey which was founded in 1973 by 6 of the Italian Benedictine abbey of nuns and has grown to about 100 members today, who are dedicated to silence and contemplation. Without words they fill their day repairing ecclesiastical garments.
When you walk around the perimeter of the island there is a path called “of Silence and Meditation”. In one direction the signs focus on silence and meditation, when you walk in the opposite direction, the other side of the signs focus on meditation and inner reflection. If you are in this region, come to the island and take time to walk the 20 minute path and contemplate each one with the nuns that have taken the code of silence.

Isola San Giulio
