Lago Maggiore which has an area of 212 km (131 miles) and spans 65 km (40 miles) in length from Ticino Switzerland to Sesto Calende Italy, is the second largest lake in Italy of which the first is Lago Garda. It is located 194 meters (636 feet) above sea level, and has a maximum depth of 372 meters (1220 feet). It was form through tectonic glacial movement.
It is located on the south side of the alps and it's shoreline in Italy is divided between the Italian regions of Piedmont and Lombardy. With a mild climate in summer and winter, the region is well know for Mediterranean vegetation with gardens growing rare and exotic plants.
There are 42 towns and villages that have shorelines next to Lago Maggiore and today I'm going to talk about fishing in Stresa, the town we have been living in. The first time I saw someone fishing, made me think is there fish in these waters? Not only that, it seemed they were being very sneaky about it that I thought it must be illegal. Lucky for the internet, I found out more about fishing on Lago Maggiore.
To answer the first question, are there fish in this lake? Yes there are and many of them! Here are the regulations fishermen must follow for the type of fish, size and prohibition period. There are also other restrictions on certain types of fish as well.
Pike, perch, carp, and trout grow to huge sizes here. But there is an unusual inhabitant — a big-tailed perch, or bass. Bass was not found in Lago Maggiore or in the neighboring lakes prior to an American species that was specifically brought here to reduce the mosquito population. Which it did great job in achieving.
The table above also answers my second question, that it is not illegal to fish in Lago Maggiore. A little more research and I found out that everyone over 14 years of age has to have a Type B amateur fishing license which is valid for 365 days to fish this lake. This license cost € 35 or $ 45 Canadian and is regulated by FIPSAS (Federazione Italiana Pesca Sportiva e Attività Subacquee). If you are a foreigner and would like to fish this lake you can purchase a Type D amateur for € 14 or $18 which is valid for 3 months. Therefore in actuality it is cheap to fish in this lake.
So why did I think it was illegal? In this video you will see a couple of men fishing. The one saw me and was really sneaky. He caught a fish and I didn't see him throw it back into the water. I did see him walk to the side where there were some bushes and I thought he was getting worms for his next fish. NOPE, he actually had a cooler hiding in the bush, which he would secretly place the fish in. So, I'm thinking he didn't spend the money to buy a license.
Because I was up early and walking when it is really quiet out, I got to see a few more enjoying fishing this amazing lake. Here is a video of those beautiful moments.

Il Lago Maggiore che ha una superficie di 212 km e si estende per 65 km di lunghezza dal Ticino Svizzera a Sesto Calende Italia, è il secondo lago più grande d'Italia di cui il primo è il Lago di Garda. Si trova a 194 metri sul livello del mare e ha una profondità massima di 372 metri. Si è formata attraverso il movimento glaciale tettonico.
Si trova a sud delle Alpi e le sue coste in Italia sono divise tra le regioni italiane del Piemonte e della Lombardia. Con un clima mite in estate e in inverno, la regione è ben nota per la vegetazione mediterranea con giardini che coltivano piante rare ed esotiche.
Ci sono 42 paesi che hanno un litorale vicino al Lago Maggiore e oggi parlerò di pescare a Stresa, il paese in cui viviamo. La prima volta che ho visto qualcuno pescare, mi ha fatto pensare che in queste acque c'è del pesce? Ed era legale a pescare. Fortunatamente per internet, ho trovato le risposte.
Per rispondere alla prima domanda, ci sono pesci in questo lago? Sì, ce ne sono molti! Ecco le normative che i pescatori devono seguire per tipo di pesce, taglia e periodo di divieto. Ci sono anche altre restrizioni su alcuni tipi di pesce.
Lucci, persici, carpe e trote crescono qui fino a dimensioni enormi. Ma c'è un abitante insolito: un trespolo della coda grossa o basso. Il pesce persici non è stata trovato nel Lago Maggiore o nei i laghi limitrofi. Una specie americana è stata portata qui per ridurre la popolazione di zanzare. Questi hanno fatto un ottimo lavoro per raggiungere questo obiettivo.
La tabella sopra risponde la mia seconda domanda, che è legale pescare nel Lago Maggiore. Ancora un po' di ricerca e ho scoperto che tutti i maggiori di 14 anni devono avere una licenza di pesca amatoriale di tipo B valida 365 giorni per pescare in questo lago. Questa licenza costa € 35 ed è regolamentata dalla FIPSAS (Federazione Italiana Pesca Sportiva e Attività Subacquee). Se sei straniero e vorresti pescare in questo lago puoi acquistare un dilettante di tipo D per € 14 che è valido per 3 mesi. Quindi in realtà è economico pescare in questo lago.
Allora perché ho pensato che fosse illegale? In questo video vedrai una coppia di uomini che pescano. Quello mi ha visto ed è stato davvero subdolo. Ha preso un pesce e non l'ho visto ributtarlo in acqua. L'ho visto camminare verso il lato dove c'erano dei cespugli e ho pensato che sta prendendo i vermi per il suo prossimo pesce. NO, in realtà aveva un frigorifero nascosto nella bosco, in cui avrebbe messo segretamente il pesce. Quindi, penso che non abbia speso i soldi per comprare una licenza.
Mi sveglio presto e cammino quando fuori è davvero tranquillo. Ho visto più uomini pescare in questo fantastico lago. Ecco un video di quei bei momenti.
