Living in Arona we are getting to experience Italian traditions and customs that I never knew existed. During my morning walk yesterday I noticed a wreath positioned on an anchor in front of the tourist office. I walked over and realized this is a monument dedicated to the Italian Navy and the wreath was placed because today, June 10th is Navy Day.
Navy day dates back to March 13, 1939 when each individual armed forces had the opportunity to choose the day to celebrate its own holiday. For the Navy, June 10 was chosen because of the significant and daring actions carried out at sea during the 1st World War by Commander Luigi Rizzo who torpedoed and sank the powerful Austrian Santo Stefano battleship. This was called the Premuda feat.
On the first event solemn ceremonies were held in military squares and in Rome over 22,000 sailors paid homage to the tomb of the unknown soldier. Due to 1st and 2nd World Wars, the celebrations were toned down and even temporarily suspended from 1945 – 1949. When it was reinstated in 1950 it was combined with the feast of Santa Barbara on December 4th.
It wasn’t until 1963 when the president of the National Association for Sailors of Italy, asked the ministry to bring the celebratory date back to the most significant date June 10th. Ministerial authorization was obtained and the celebrations resumed on June 10, 1964 and hasn’t changed since.

Giornata della Marina Militare
Vivendo ad Arona stiamo sperimentando tradizioni e usanze italiane che non sapevo esistessero. Durante la mia passeggiata mattutina di ieri ho notato una corona posizionata su un'ancora di fronte all'ufficio turistico. Mi sono avvicinato e mi sono reso conto che si tratta di un monumento dedicato alla Marina Militare Italiana e la corona di fiori è stata posta perché oggi, 10 giugno, è la Giornata della Marina.
La Giornata della Marina risale al 13 marzo 1939 quando ogni singola forza armata aveva la possibilità di scegliere il giorno per celebrare la propria festività. Per la Marina Militare, il 10 giugno fu scelto per le significative e ardite azioni compiute in mare durante la 1° Guerra Mondiale dal Comandante Luigi Rizzo che silurò e affondò la potente corazzata austriaca Santo Stefano. Questa è stata chiamata l'impresa Premuda.
Il primo evento si svolsero cerimonie solenni nelle piazze militari e a Roma oltre 22.000 marinai resero omaggio alla tomba del milite ignoto. A causa della prima e della seconda guerra mondiale, le celebrazioni furono attenuate e persino temporaneamente sospese dal 1945 al 1949. Quando fu ripristinata nel 1950 fu abbinata alla festa di Santa Barbara il 4 dicembre.
Fu solo nel 1963 che il presidente dell'Associazione Nazionale Marinai d'Italia, chiese al ministero di riportare la data celebrativa alla data più significativa, il 10 giugno. Ottenuta l'autorizzazione ministeriale, le celebrazioni ripresero il 10 giugno 1964 e da allora non sono cambiate.
