Isola Madre is the largest of the three Borromean Islands on Lago Maggiore with the other two being Isola Bella and Isola dei Pescatori. The islands take their name "Borromean" from the aristocratic Borromeo family that owned them. They took ownership of the islands as well as other properties in and around Stresa in the 16th and 17th centuries. Only the best architects and gardeners were called upon to breathe life into their ambitious projects.
Isola Bella and Isola Madre were transformed into luxurious residences, while Isola dei Pescatori was left alone to keep thriving as a fishing village. I will blog about Isola Bella and Pescatori separately. Today I'm providing some history, video's and pictures of Isola Madre.
We can reach Isola Madre by taking little shuttle boats that leave from Stresa every half hour. The boats take you to Isola Bella first, then Isola del Pescatori and finally Isola Madre last. It is an easy boat ride full of incredible scenery. The last time we were here we visited all three islands in one day. I felt it was really rushed, and if you are only here for a couple of days then that is the way to go. For my purpose, I've decided to spend one afternoon at Isola Madre, to enjoy the serenity, and will do the other two on a separate day.
L'Isola Madre è la più grande delle tre Isole Borromee sul Lago Maggiore con le altre due Isola Bella e Isola dei Pescatori. Le isole prendono il nome "Borromeo" dall'aristocratica famiglia Borromeo che le possedeva. Nel XVI e XVII secolo presero possesso delle isole e di altri proprietà a Stresa e dintorni. Solo i migliori architetti e giardinieri sono stati chiamati a dare vita ai loro ambiziosi progetti.
L'Isola Bella e l'Isola Madre furono trasformate in lussuose residenze, mentre l'Isola dei Pescatori fu lasciata sola a continuare a prosperare come villaggio di pescatori. Scriverò un blog su Isola Bella e Pescatori separatamente. Oggi vi fornisco un po' di storia, video e immagini dell'Isola Madre.
Possiamo raggiungere l'Isola Madre prendendo piccole navette che partono da Stresa ogni mezz'ora. I battelli portano prima all'Isola Bella, poi all'Isola del Pescatori e infine all'Isola Madre. È un giro in barca facile pieno di paesaggi incredibili. L'ultima volta che siamo stati qui abbiamo visitato tutte e tre le isole in un giorno. Ho sentito che era davvero di fretta, e se sei qui solo per un paio di giorni, allora questa è la strada da percorrere. Per il mio scopo ho deciso di trascorrere un pomeriggio all'Isola Madre, per godermi la serenità, e gli altri due lo farò in un giorno a parte.

Once on Isola Madre, it boasts a 20-acre park and is considered one of the most well-preserved and and impressive in Italy. The island was cultivated in the 16th century by the Borromeo family. They were so impressed by the mild climate that they brought citrus trees and vines to the island.
In the nineteenth century, the orchard transformed to botanical gardens which is attributed to Count Vitaliano IX Borromeo, who was a passionate botanist. It took him over fifty years and he spared no expense and effort to expand his collection of valuable plants from every part of the the world. Today Isola Madre has many ancient trees and a population of birds, peacocks, parrots and pheasants. It truly is a serene and earthly paradise. Below are many photos and videos of the garden.
Quando sei sull'Isola Madre, ha un parco di 20 acri ed è considerato uno dei più ben conservati e impressionanti d'Italia. L'isola fu coltivata nel XVI secolo dalla famiglia Borromeo. La famiglia rimase così colpita dal clima mite che portò sull'isola alberi di agrumi e viti.
Nel XIX secolo il frutteto fu trasformato in orto botanico. Questo per via del conte Vitaliano IX Borromeo, che aveva una passione per la botanica. Gli ci sono voluti più di cinquant'anni e non ha badato a spese e sforzi per espandere la sua collezione di piante pregiate da ogni parte del mondo. Oggi l'Isola Madre ha molti alberi secolari e una popolazione di uccelli, pavoni, pappagalli e fagiani. È davvero un paradiso terrestre e sereno. Ecco tante foto e video del giardino.
The garden was abloom with all types of flowers. The jasmine especially was everywhere and when you walked the scent cascaded throughout the park. Below are photos of what I saw as we walked peacefully on the property.
Il giardino era fiorito con tutti i tipi di fiori. Soprattutto il gelsomino era ovunque e quando camminavi il profumo si diffondeva a cascata in tutto il parco. Ecco le foto di ciò che ho visto mentre camminavamo pacificamente nella proprietà.
The birds can be heard everywhere and they aren't shy about coming to say hi. The pheasants had some incredible colours and the peacocks where white. Below are some photo's as well as a video of the beautiful birds that inhabit this peaceful island.

There is an incredible historical Palazzo (Mansion/Palace) that was home to Borromeo family in the 1700s and 1800s. In the early 1900s it was turned into a hotel that only hosted the wealthiest of clientele and royalty. In 1987 the palazzo was transferred to the town council of Cesano Maderno and it's rich 17th-century furniture was moved back. Princess Bona Borromeo was adamant to restore the palazzo to reflect it's past and then once she achieved this she opened it up to the public to love. The furniture and paintings are incredible and here are many photo's to enjoy:
C'è un incredibile Palazzo storico (Mangione/Palazzo) che che era la casa di della famiglia Borromeo nel 1700 e 1800. Agli inizi del 1900 è stato trasformato in un hotel che ospitava solo la clientela più facoltosa e i reali. Nel 1987 il palazzo è stato trasferito al Comune di Cesano Maderno ed i suoi ricchi mobili del 17° secolo sono stati riportati indietro. La principessa Bona Borromeo è stata irremovibile nel restaurare il palazzo per riflettere il suo passato e poi, una volta raggiunto questo obiettivo, lo ha aperto al pubblico per amarlo. I mobili e i dipinti sono incredibili e qui ci sono molte foto da goderti:
The Borromeo family loved to entertain guests in their home theater where the puppet (marionettes) shows with intricate stages, puppets and scenery were the backdrop of this theatre. Alessandro Sanquirico who was a set designer for Teatro alla Scala opera house in Milan worked for the Borromeos in the 1830s and created the puppets, displays, and different mechanical devices that would create fog, fire and sounds.
The collection currently on display includes set designs, puppets, props, scripts, sheet music, payment receipts and even string for the marionettes. It is one of the largest and best preserved collection in the world. Below are some photos and a video of the collection:
La famiglia Borromeo amava intrattenere gli ospiti nel suo teatro a casa dove gli spettacoli di marionette con intricati palchi, burattini e scenografie erano spettacolari. Alessandro Sanquirico, scenografo per il Teatro alla Scala di Milano, lavorò per i Borromeo negli anni '30 dell'Ottocento e creò i marionette, le rappresentazioni e diversi dispositivi meccanici che avrebbero creato nebbia, fuoco e suoni.
La collezione esposta nel palazzo è composta da scenografie, pupazzi, sceneggiature, spartiti, ricevute di pagamento e archi per le marionette. È una delle collezioni più grandi e meglio conservate al mondo. Ecco alcune foto e un video della collezione:
We truly loved Isola Madre and spent an afternoon just basking in the sun and the glory of this amazing island.
Abbiamo davvero amato l'Isola Madre e abbiamo trascorso un pomeriggio godendoci il sole e la gloria di questa meravigliosa isola.
