Isola dei Pescatori (Fisherman's Island) is also knows as Isola Superiore as it is the most northerly island of the three principle Borromean Islands in Lago Maggiore, Italy with the other two being Isola Bella and Isola dei Pescatori. The islands take their name "Borromean" from the aristocratic Borromeo family that owned them. They took ownership of the islands as well as other properties in and around Stresa in the 16th and 17th centuries.. The tiny island of Malghera which you see in the photo separates Isola dei Pescatori and Isola Bella.
In the 1970s the population of Isola dei Pescatori was around 210 people as it was a fishing island. However as of 2018, there are only 25 full time inhabitants year-round because fishing has been replaced with tourism as the central economic life of the island.
The island is roughly 3000 feet long and 1000 feet wide. The characteristic multi-story houses were built to take advantage of the small space available and almost all homes have long balconies so they could dry their catch of the day.
The narrow winding, walkways (no roads in this town) lead to the promenade at the northern tip of the island. In the tiny piazza (square) sits a church dedicated to San Vittore (the patron saint) and it has traces of an ancient chapel the is believed to have been constructed for the monks Scozzòla (an abbey of San Donato di Sesto Calende founded by Liutardo, bishop of Pavia, in the mid ninth century). There was a wedding on the day we passed it and you will see it in the photos.
L'Isola dei Pescatori è anche conosciuta come Isola Superiore in quanto è l'isola più settentrionale delle tre principali Isole Borromee del Lago Maggiore, in Italia, con le altre due Isola Bella e Isola dei Pescatori. Negli anni '70 la popolazione dell'Isola dei Pescatori era di circa 210 persone in quanto era un villaggio di pescatori. Tuttavia, nel 2018, ci sono solo 25 abitanti a tempo pieno tutto l'anno perché la pesca è stata sostituita dal turismo come vita economica centrale dell'isola.
L'isola è lunga circa 915 metri i e larga 300 metri. Le case a più piani sono state costruite per sfruttare il piccolo spazio disponibile sull'isola. La maggior parte delle case hanno lunghi balconi in modo da poter asciugare il pesce pescato quel giorno.
Le strette e tortuose passerelle (nessuna strada in questa città) conducono al lungomare all'estremità settentrionale dell'isola. Nella piazzetta si trova una chiesa dedicata a San Vittore. Ha tracce di un'antica cappella che si ritiene sia stata costruita per i monaci Scozzòla (abbazia di San Donato di Sesto Calende fondata da Liutardo, vescovo di Pavia, a metà del IX secolo). C'è stato un matrimonio il giorno in cui l'abbiamo passato e lo vedrai nelle foto.
