International Women’s day has been celebrated in the United States since 1908, when inequality and oppression spurred 15,000 women to march through New York City demanding shorter hours, more pay and voting rights. The year after on February 28, 1909, the Socialist Party of America declared National Women’s Day would be celebrated on the last Sunday of February.
La giornata internazionale della donna è stata celebrata negli Stati Uniti dal 1908, quando la disuguaglianza e l'oppressione hanno spinto 15.000 donne a marciare attraverso New York City chiedendo orari più brevi, più retribuzione e diritti di voto. L'anno dopo, il 28 febbraio 1909, il Partito Socialista d'America dichiarò che la Giornata Nazionale della Donna sarebbe stata celebrata l'ultima domenica di febbraio.
With Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland joining the cause in 1911 the first International Women’s Day was held on March 19th. It was agreed in 1914 by the international community that International Woman’s Day be held on March 8 going forward. It wasn’t until 1922 that Italy celebrated it’s first Festa Della Donna.
Con Austria, Danimarca, Germania e Svizzera che si unirono alla causa nel 1911, il 19 marzo si tenne la prima Giornata internazionale della donna. Nel 1914 la comunità internazionale decise che la Giornata internazionale della donna si sarebbe tenuta l'8 marzo in avanti. Fu solo nel 1922 che l'Italia celebrò la sua prima Festa Della Donna.
In Italy I see these amazing yellow flowers, that my mom absolutely loved and had them everywhere. To her it was a symbol of freedom. But I didn’t understand that in Italy, the Mimosa (botanical name Acacia Dealbata), is the symbol of International Woman’s Day. It dates back to 1946 when Rita Montagnana and Teresa Mattei, activists of the Unione Donne d’Italia (UDI), suggested the Mimosa sprig be given to all women after the war as a sign of respect and support.
In Italia vedo questi meravigliosi fiori gialli, che mia mamma adorava e li aveva ovunque. Per lei era un simbolo di libertà. Ma non ho capito che in Italia, la Mimosa (nome botanico Acacia Dealbata), è il simbolo della Giornata Internazionale della Donna. Risale al 1946 quando Rita Montagnana e Teresa Mattei, attiviste dell'Unione Donne d'Italia (UDI), suggerirono di donare il rametto di Mimosa a tutte le donne dopo la guerra in segno di rispetto e sostegno.
The Mimosa represents femininity because it looks very delicate but in actuality is very strong and able to grow in the roughest lands. Just like women! So when in Italy, bring a sprig to the women you love to show your respect and adoration.
La Mimosa rappresenta la femminilità perché sembra molto delicata ma in realtà è molto forte e in grado di crescere nelle terre più impervie. Proprio come le donne! Quindi, quando sei in Italia, porta un rametto alle donne che ami per mostrare il tuo rispetto e adorazione.
Every year there is a theme celebrated and this year it is #EmbraceEquity. Hope for a world free of bias, sterotypes and discrimation. A world diverse, inclusive and equitable for all and mostly valued for our differences.
Ogni anno si celebra un tema e quest'anno è #Abbraccial'equità. Speranza per un mondo libero da pregiudizi, sterotipi e discrimazione. Un mondo diversificato, inclusivo ed equo per tutti e soprattutto apprezzato per le nostre differenze.
We can choose to challenge gender bias and inequality and we can CELEBRATE women’s achievements. Let’s make it happen by embracing equity:
Think about it, value it and embrace it
We have to believe in it and make our world inclusive
Collectively we can forge positive change
Don’t just say it. Think it! Be it! Do it! Value it! And TRULY EMBRACE EQUITY in all forms.
Possiamo scegliere di sfidare i pregiudizi di genere e la disuguaglianza e possiamo CELEBRARE le conquiste delle donne. Facciamolo accadere abbracciando l'equità:
Pensaci, valorizzalo e abbraccialo
Dobbiamo crederci e rendere il nostro mondo inclusivo
Collettivamente possiamo forgiare un cambiamento positivo
Non limitarti a dirlo. Pensaci! Sii! Fallo! Valutalo! E ABBRACCIARE VERAMENTE L'EQUITÀ in tutte le forme.
