Being in Italy, I’ve returned to the Catholic Church as here it is pure and reminds me of the teachings I learned when I was a little girl. Today is Good Friday, a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Christian denominations include Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, Anglican, Methodist, Oriental Orthodox, United Presbyterian and some Reformed traditions. There may be some variation on how Holy Week is observed in each denomination, I will talk about my Catholic observance.
Good Friday is observed during Holy week that starts on Palm Sunday the Sunday before Easter and is part of the Paschal Triduum:
Palm Sunday – commemorates Jesus’ arrival into Jerusalem and the name originates from the palm branches the crowd waved to great and honour Jesus Christ as he entered the city
Holy or Maundy Thursday – commemorates The Lord’s Last Supper, when he established the sacrament of Holy Communion prior to his execution. It is the last meal he shared with his Disciples in Jerusalem and predicted his betrayal. Christ also washed the feet of his Disciples, who would become the first priests. During the Passover meal, Jesus breaks bread and gives it to his Disciples stating “This is my body, which is given for you”. He then takes the cup filled with wine and states “This is my blood; it is believed those who eat of Christ’s flesh and blood shall have eternal life”
Good Friday – commemorates the day Jesus Christ was crucified on the cross. According to the gospels, Jesus was betrayed by Judas on the night of the last supper and was arrested the next morning for claiming he was the King of Jews. Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of the region found no reason to condemn Jesus but the crowds were enraged and to prevent a riot, Pilate reluctantly agreed to execute Jesus and sentenced him to crucifixion. Jesus was flogged, a crown of thorns was placed on his head, and he had to carry his cross up to Calvary, where he was nailed to the cross and placed between two thieves. The sign above him had I.N.R.I (Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum) “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.”
Holy Night – Easter Vigil or Paschal Vigil is a liturgy celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is when God raised Jesus from the dead on the third day. The Vigil is held between the hours of sunset on Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter Sunday and consists of:
**The Service of Light – a fire is prepared and the priest blesses it. The Paschal candle is blessed then lit. This Paschal candle will be utilized throughout the season of Easter, staying in the sanctuary of the church, and throughout the forthcoming year at baptisms and funerals, representing that Christ is "light and life"
**Liturgy of the Word – Easter Vigil recounts the outstanding deeds of the history of salvation. Seven readings of the Old Testament and two from the New Testament are chosen and the faithful are encouraged to meditate on these readings
**The Rite of Baptism – There is consecration of the water of baptism and the sacrament of baptism is performed on those wanting to be baptized. Renewal of the baptismal vows by the whole congregation
**Liturgy of the Eucharist – Care is taken not to rush this night’s celebration of the Eucharist where bread and wine are the flesh and blood of Jesus
Good Friday is a day we are to abstain from meat. Actually, when I was a teenager and into young adulthood, I even fasted on this day. Why do Catholics abstain from eating meat or fast on Good Friday? We abstain from meat as a form of penance in honour of the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for our sake on the cross. This minor sacrifice, is a way of uniting Catholics to the ultimate sacrifice of Christ, when he died to take away our sins. This year I’m fasting but will have milk for the pills I have to take.

Settimana Santa
Essendo in Italia, sono tornata alla Chiesa cattolica perché qui è pura e mi ricorda gli insegnamenti che ho imparato quando ero una bambina. Oggi è il Venerdì Santo, una festa cristiana che commemora la crocifissione di Gesù Cristo. Le denominazioni cristiane includono la cattolica, la ortodossa orientale, la luterana, l'anglicana, la metodista, la ortodossa orientale, la presbiteriana unita e alcune tradizioni riformate. Ci possono essere alcune variazioni su come viene osservato La Settimana Santa in ogni denominazione, parlerò della mia osservanza cattolica.
Il Venerdì Santo si celebra durante la Settimana Santa che inizia la Domenica delle Palme, la domenica prima di Pasqua, e fa parte del Triduo Pasquale:
Domenica delle Palme – commemora l'arrivo di Gesù a Gerusalemme e il nome deriva dai rami di palma che la folla sventolava in onore di Gesù Cristo quando entrò in città
Giovedì Santo – commemora l'Ultima Cena del Signore, quando stabilì il sacramento della Santa Comunione prima della sua esecuzione. È l'ultimo pasto che ha condiviso con i suoi discepoli a Gerusalemme e ha predetto il suo tradimento. Cristo lavò anche i piedi ai suoi discepoli, che sarebbero diventati i primi sacerdoti. Durante la cena pasquale, Gesù spezza il pane e lo dona ai suoi discepoli dicendo: "Questo è il mio corpo, che è dato per voi". Poi prende il calice pieno di vino e dice: "Questo è il mio sangue; si crede che coloro che mangiano della carne e del sangue di Cristo avranno la vita eterna"
Venerdì Santo – commemora il giorno in cui Gesù Cristo fu crocifisso sulla croce. Secondo i vangeli, Gesù fu tradito da Giuda la notte dell'ultima cena e fu arrestato la mattina dopo per aver affermato di essere il re dei Giudei. Ponzio Pilato, il governatore romano della regione, non trovò alcun motivo per condannare Gesù, ma la folla era infuriata e, per evitare una sommossa, Pilato accettò con riluttanza di giustiziare Gesù e lo condannò alla crocifissione. Gesù fu fustigato, gli fu posta sul capo una corona di spine e dovette portare la sua croce fino al Calvario, dove fu inchiodato alla croce e posto tra due ladroni. Il cartello sopra di lui aveva I.N.R.I (Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum) "Gesù di Nazareth, Re dei Giudei"
Notte Santa – La Veglia Pasquale è una liturgia che celebra la Resurrezione di Gesù Cristo. Questo è il momento in cui Dio ha risuscitato Gesù dai morti il terzo giorno. La Veglia si svolge tra le ore del tramonto del Sabato Santo e l'alba della Domenica di Pasqua e consiste in:
**Il Servizio della Luce: si prepara un fuoco e il sacerdote lo benedice. La candela pasquale viene benedetto e poi acceso. Questo candela pasquale sarà utilizzato per tutto il tempo di Pasqua, rimanendo nel santuario della chiesa, e per tutto l'anno successivo in occasione di battesimi e funerali, rappresentando che Cristo è "luce e vita"
**Liturgia della Parola – La Veglia Pasquale racconta le opere salienti della storia della salvezza. Si scelgono sette letture dell'Antico Testamento e due del Nuovo Testamento e si incoraggiano i fedeli a meditare su queste letture
**Il Rito del Battesimo – C'è la consacrazione dell'acqua del battesimo e il sacramento del battesimo viene eseguito su coloro che vogliono essere battezzati. Rinnovo dei voti battesimali da parte di tutta la congregazione
**Liturgia dell'Eucaristia – Si fa attenzione a non affrettare la celebrazione dell'Eucaristia di questa sera, dove il pane e il vino sono la carne e il sangue di Gesù
Il Venerdì Santo è un giorno in cui dobbiamo astenerci dalla carne. In realtà, quando ero adolescente e nella giovane età adulta, digiunavo in questo giorno. Perché i cattolici si astengono dal mangiare carne o digiunare il Venerdì Santo? Ci asteniamo dalla carne come forma di penitenza in onore del sacrificio che Gesù Cristo ha fatto per noi sulla croce. Questo piccolo sacrificio, è un modo per unire i cattolici all'ultimo sacrificio di Cristo, quando è morto per togliere i nostri peccati. Quest'anno sto digiunando ma avrò il latte per le pillole che devo prendere.
Spero che trascorrere una meravigliosa weekend di Santa Pasqua, pieno di ricordi preziosi che durano tutta la vita e che il sacrificio che Gesù ha compiuto per l'umanità ci ricordi quanto la vita sia veramente preziosa.
