Our Arona Manger - Nostro Presepe in Arona
Recently we were at Città Fiera, a mall in Udine, and had the opportunity to see an incredible exposition with 100 mangers that were handcrafted and on display for everyone to enjoy. As we walked through the displays, each had the artists name, the title they gave the manger, the category it represented and the number of the submission.
Città Fiera holds this event every year from December to end of January. Contestants create mangers in three categories:
Traditional – mangers are made up of statues of different materials and arranged in the setting reconstructed in the classic traditional way
Nature and recycling – mangers are made up of natural materials (wood, leaves, pine cones, nuts, etc.) recycled materials (bottles, old items, caps, etc.)
Artists – mangers made of precious materials, on canvas, yarn, knitting, crochet, paintings, sculptures, etc.
All mangers will be voted on by visitors to exhibition, on-line voting and technical jury made up of three people. The one winner in each category wins € 150 gift cards. The organizers also reserve the right to decree special mentions for one or more nativity scenes. These awards will be € 50 gift cards.
Being that I love to research I decided to find out the history of the manger. Being Catholic, I knew Mary laid baby Jesus in a manger, but I didn’t know the word “manger” comes from the Latin word munducare which means “to eat”. A manger is a wooden or stone feeding trough or food box that holds hay for larger animals like horses, cattle and donkeys. Mangers were located in stables, corals and caves or wherever livestock were kept. The farmers kept these mangers full of hay so the animals wouldn’t go hungry.
When Joseph and a very pregnant Mary arrived in Bethlehem there was no room in the inn. Therefore, they were forced to find lodging somewhere else, which probably was a cave. Of course, Mary didn’t want her baby to be born on hard, cold ground and therefore made due with what was around her. The manger, made of hay provided a soft, off the ground space that would keep the child safe.
It is said, Jesus wasn’t laid in the manger by accident. The manger is a major spiritual symbol. Animals go to the manager for physical food, but with Jesus lying on the hay in the manger, we can go there for spiritual food. The manger therefore is a huge sign that Jesus is sustenance for us. Merry Christmas everyone and remember the reason for the season is baby Jesus who is food for our souls.

Storia del "Presepi"
Recentemente siamo stati a Città Fiera un centro commerciale a Udine e abbiamo avuto l'opportunità di vedere un'incredibile esposizione con 100 presepi realizzate artigianalmente ed esposte per tutti. Mentre camminavamo attraverso i display, ognuno aveva il nome dell'artista, il titolo che hanno dato alla presepi, la categoria che rappresentava e il numero della presentazione.
Città Fiera organizza questo evento ogni anno da dicembre a fine gennaio. I concorrenti creano presepi in tre categorie:
Tradizionale – le presepi sono costituite da statue di materiali diversi e disposte nell'ambiente ricostruito nel classico modo tradizionale
Natura e riciclo – le presepi sono costituite da materiali naturali (legno, foglie, pigne, noci, ecc.) materiali riciclati (bottiglie, vecchi oggetti, tappi, ecc.)
Artisti – presepi fatte di materiali preziosi, su tela, filati, maglieria, uncinetto, dipinti, sculture, ecc.
Tutti i presepi saranno votati dai visitatori della mostra, dalle votazioni on-line e dalla giuria tecnica composta da tre persone. Il vincitore di ogni categoria vince una carte regalo da € 150. Gli organizzatori si riservano inoltre di decretare menzioni speciali per uno o più presepi. Questi premi saranno carte regalo di € 50.
Perché amo ricercare ho deciso di scoprire la storia del presepe. Essendo cattolico, sapevo che Maria aveva posato Gesù bambino in un presepe, ma non sapevo che la parola "presepe" deriva dalla parola latina munducare che significa "mangiare". Una culla è una mangiatoia in legno o pietra o una scatola di cibo che contiene fieno per animali più grandi come cavalli, bovini e asini. I presepi si trovavano in stalle, coralli e grotte o dove si teneva il bestiame. I contadini tenevano queste culle piene di fieno in modo che gli animali non soffrissero la fame.
Quando Giuseppe e Maria che era molto incinta arrivarono a Betlemme non c'era posto nella locanda. Pertanto, furono costretti a trovare alloggio da qualche altra parte, che probabilmente era una grotta. Naturalmente, Maria non voleva che il suo bambino nascesse su un terreno duro e freddo e quindi ha usato ciò che era intorno a lei. Il presepe, fatta di fieno, forniva uno spazio morbido e sopre il suolo che hai tenuto il bambino sicuro.
Si dice che Gesù non fu deposto nel presepe per caso. Il presepe è un importante simbolo spirituale. Gli animali vanno al presepe per il cibo fisico, ma con Gesù che giace nel presepe, possiamo andare lì per il cibo spirituale. Il presepe è dunque un segno enorme che Gesù è nostro sostentamento. Buon Natale a tutti e ricordate che il motivo delle feste è Gesù bambino che è cibo per le nostre anime.
