Today, June 2nd, is the "77th Festa della Repubblica" (Italy's National Day) and being that it is a Friday everyone has the day off and is flocking to the lake or to attend the parade at 9;30 am. It is a beautiful 24°C day, and people leave their homes in the city to come to Lago Maggiore to enjoy the serenity the lake brings.
Why is this this holiday important? Well, on June 2 and 3rd in 1946, the Italian population took to the polls to vote on a referendum. They voted on which state to give the country; a Monarch State or a Republic State. This referendum was announced at the end of World War II when the Fascist Regime fell, denouncing dictatorship which was run by the Savoy Royal family.
This was the first vote in Italian history that was held by universal suffrage, which means, any adult citizen has the right to vote. This is regardless of wealth, income, gender, social status, race, ethnicity, political stance, or any other restriction, subject only to relatively minor exceptions. The results were 12,717,923 votes for the republic and 10,719,284 for the monarchy (with a percentage, respectively, of 54.3% and 45.7%).
With a republican win, the King of Italy, Umberto II of Savoy decided to leave Italy on June 13th to avoid clashes between monarchists and republicans. He then went into exile in Portugal and in 1948, all male descendants of Umberto were banned to enter Italy. This provision was repelled in 2002. It wasn’t until the 11th of June,1946, that Republic day was declared a public holiday and the first celebration of the Festa della Repubblica took place on June 2, 1947.
This day is honoured in Rome with a flag-raising ceremony and laying of laurel wreath by the President of the Italian Republic at the Altare della Patria a memorial honouring the unknown soldiers of World War I. Across the country there will be parades, festivals, and special events as it is a public holiday where schools, government buildings and many businesses are closed.
Being that day hospital is closed Gianni has a breather from his treatment so we are getting caught up on a few things around the house. Oggi, 2 giugno, è la "77a Festa della Repubblica" ed essendo un venerdì tutti hanno il giorno libero e si riversano al lago o per andare alla sfilata alle 9:30. È una bella giornata di 24 ° C e le persone lasciano le loro case in città per venire sul Lago Maggiore per godersi la serenità che il lago porta.
Perché questa festa è importante? Ebbene, il 2 e 3 giugno 1946, la popolazione italiana hanno votato su un referendum per quale stato dare al paese; uno Stato monarca o uno Stato repubblicano. Questo referendum fu annunciato alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale quando cadde il regime fascista, denunciando la dittatura che era gestita dalla famiglia reale Savoia.

Questo giorno è onorato a Roma con una cerimonia di alzabandiera e la deposizione di una corona d'alloro da parte del Presidente della Repubblica Italiana presso l'Altare della Patria, un memoriale in onore dei soldati ignoti della prima guerra mondiale. Gli edifici governativi e molte aziende sono chiusi.
Essendo quel day hospital è chiuso, Gianni ha un respiro dal suo trattamento, quindi ci stiamo facendo prendere da alcune cose in casa. Siamo così fortunati a far parte di questo meraviglioso paese che ci ha dato una seconda possibilità di vita in un modo che non ci saremmo mai aspettati tutto grazie all' Ospedale della Carità di Novara.
