While visiting Prossenicco, Loris and Alessia brought us to Porzûs for a Sagra (Festival) called Festa della Meda. This was the 28th edition of this festival dedicated to the Medi which is a Haystack. Why a festival to the Meda? Well, back in the day, these Mede were made to store the hay for winter months. They had to be made just right to ensure the hay would stay put and not rot. This tradition no longer exists but these festivals allow the veterans and the young ones to compete to see who could make the best Meda.
The effort that goes in to prep, build and maintain a Meda is hard work. There are many that work to build it so that it is a perfect vessel to hold the hay. It starts with the Meda Pole, which is pointed at one end and usually made of dry fir. To prevent the hay from touching the ground and rotting, a base, raised from the ground, resting on stones or stumps was built. This function was usually done by the head of the family as it needed to be done right and if it wasn’t the family would be the ridicule of the village.
The hay then needs to be placed strategically on the base so that the proportions are equal around the base. As the hay is being placed on the pile, the person trampling on the hay (lets call him hay master) has to continually compact it with his feet and body so the hay becomes a truncated/conical shape on the Meda Pole.
The women of the family were usually responsible for ensuring the shape took form because they would be the ones combing the surface, while the other men would heave the hay up to the hay master to keep building the Meda. At different levels, the hay master would bang the hay pile so the loose hay pieces would fall to the ground. Also, the men would pull pieces of hay off the ground to ensure the base was free of hay touching the ground.
Once all the hay was used up, the final activity was to place a Rozh or Parsor (no translation in English) needed to be done. This is where long lengths of hay are carefully twisted like a rope, almost interwoven, like spinning wool a few metres long. The function of this would be to firstly seal the top of the Meda where the pole and hay meet. This will stop rain or snow from going down the haystack. Secondly, it gives the Meda, its aesthetic element, showing it is a completed Meda.
We spent over an hour watching two teams, one a veteran and the other the young ones build their Meda’s. It was an experience I will never forget. The amount of effort and work required of all that were building them was unbelievable. Then add the 35°C weather, it was hard work for them. Of course, the veteran team got theirs done first as there has to be some gain with experience. However, the young ones finished theirs a little later but the quality was just as good as the veterans.
The festival had amazing food and drink as well as a small artisan market and games for kids to play with. It truly was a day to remember. Let’s continue to learn new things as it allows us to live life well always
Festa della Meda
Durante la visita a Prossenicco, Loris e Alessia ci hanno portato a Porzûs per una Sagra chiamata Festa della Meda. Questa è stata la 28° edizione di questo festival dedicato alla Meda. Perché una festa alla Meda? Beh, in passato, questi Mede venivano fatti per conservare il fieno per i mesi invernali. Dovevano essere fatti nel modo giusto per garantire che il fieno rimanesse fermo e non marcisse. Questa tradizione non esiste più ma queste feste permettono ai veterani e ai giovani di fare a gara per vedere chi riusciva a fare la migliore Meda.
Lo sforzo necessario per preparare, costruire e mantenere una Meda è un duro lavoro. Ci sono molti che lavorano per costruirlo in modo che sia un recipiente perfetto per contenere il fieno. Si inizia con il Palo Meda, che è appuntito ad un'estremità e solitamente realizzato in abete secco. Per evitare che il fieno toccasse terra e marcisse, fu costruito un base, rialzato da terra, appoggiato su pietre o ceppi. Questa funzione era di solito svolta dal capofamiglia perché doveva essere fatta bene e se non lo fosse stata la famiglia sarebbe stata il ridicolo del paese.
Il fieno deve quindi essere posizionato strategicamente sulla base in modo che le proporzioni siano uguali attorno alla base. Mentre il fieno viene posizionato sul mucchio, la persona che calpesta il fieno (chiamiamolo maestro del fieno) deve compattarlo continuamente con i piedi e il corpo in modo che il fieno diventi una forma tronca/conica sul Palo della Meda.
Le donne della famiglia erano solitamente responsabili di garantire che la forma prendesse forma perché sarebbero state loro a pettinare la superficie, mentre gli altri uomini avrebbero sollevato il fieno fino al maestro di fieno per continuare a costruire la Meda. A diversi livelli, il maestro del fieno sbatteva il mucchio di fieno in modo che i pezzi di fieno sciolti cadessero a terra. Inoltre, gli uomini tiravano fuori pezzi di fieno da terra per assicurarsi che la base non toccasse il suolo.
Una volta esaurito tutto il fieno, l'attività finale consisteva nel posizionare un Rozh o Parsor da fare. È qui che lunghi tratti di fieno vengono accuratamente attorcigliati come una corda, quasi intrecciati, come lana da filatura lunga pochi metri. La funzione di questo sarebbe quella di sigillare in primo luogo la sommità della Meda dove si incontrano il palo e il fieno. Questo impedirà alla pioggia o alla neve di scendere dal pagliaio. In secondo luogo, conferisce alla Meda, il suo elemento estetico, mostrando che è una Meda completa.
Abbiamo passato più di un'ora a guardare due squadre, una veterana e l'altra giovane costruire le loro Meda. È stata un'esperienza che non dimenticherò mai. La quantità di sforzo e di lavoro richiesta a tutti coloro che li stavano costruendo era incredibile. Poi aggiungi il tempo di 35°C, è stato un duro lavoro per loro. Naturalmente, la squadra di veterani ha fatto il suo per prima perché ci deve essere un po' di guadagno con l'esperienza. Tuttavia, i giovani hanno terminato il loro un po' più tardi, ma la qualità era buona quanto i veterani.
Il festival aveva cibo e bevande incredibili, nonché un piccolo mercato artigianale e giochi con cui i bambini potevano giocare. È stato davvero un giorno da ricordare. Continuiamo a imparare cose nuove perché ci permette di vivere la vita sempre bene
