August 15th is Ferragosto and a national holiday here in Italy and when you find most mom-and-pop shops closed for a couple of weeks. As I walked in Novara yesterday, it was eerie to see the number of streets that had all the stores closed. Next door to our house, there is a large construction goods store and during the time in Canada when most construction happens, here they are closed from August 10 to 27th. All employees are off to travel with family or spend time relaxing. What a concept….Even Gianni has a break from therapy as day hospital is also closed.
Il 15 agosto è Ferragosto e una festa nazionale qui in Italia e quando trovi la maggior parte dei negozi chiusi per un paio di settimane. Mentre camminavo a Novara ieri, era inquietante vedere il numero di strade che avevano tutti i negozi chiusi. Accanto alla nostra casa, c'è un grande negozio di articoli da costruzione e durante il periodo in Canada quando la maggior parte delle costruzioni si fa, qui sono chiusi dal 10 al 27 agosto. Tutti i dipendenti sono in viaggio con la famiglia o trascorrere del tempo in relax. Che concetto....Anche Gianni si prende una pausa dalla terapia in quanto anche il day hospital è chiuso.
Interesting fact is this holiday coincides with the Catholic celebration of Assumption of Mary, however, the festivities date back to 18 BC when the first Roman Emperor Augustus declared it “Feriae Augusti” (Latin for August rest) on August 1st.
These festivities were dedicated to Conso, God of earth and fertility and was a period of rest and celebration after months of hard labour in the fields. In reality Feriae Augusti lasted the whole month of August and included celebrations of several gods, including Diana, goddess of the hunt, of animals and nature, which was held on August 13th.
Back in those days festivals and horse races were organized throughout the Roman Empire and the worker animals such as oxen, donkeys and mules were taken out of the workload and adorned with flowers. Agricultural workers would get small amounts of money and gifts from the landowners or bosses. There is an Italian expression “dare il ferragosto” (to give ferragosto) meaning to give a gift of food or money to your employees. Workers would give auguri (greetings or good wishes) to their masters and receive something in return.
Il fatto interessante è che questa festa coincide con la celebrazione cattolica dell'Assunzione di Maria, tuttavia, i festeggiamenti risalgono al 18 aC quando il primo imperatore romano Augusto lo dichiarò "Feriae Augusti" (latino per riposo di agosto) il 1 ° agosto.
Queste feste erano dedicate a Conso, Dio della terra e della fertilità ed era un periodo di riposo e di festa dopo mesi di duro lavoro nei campi. By the 7th century, in the time of the Renaissance, the custom of giving became popular that the Vatican made it obligatory. The celebrations were then assimilated by the Catholic Church and the date changed to August 15th when Virgin Mary was “received” (assunta) into heaven.
In the 1920’s, the Fascist government lowered train prices to give their populace a gift from their ‘rulers’ (the government) so they could go on a day trip or gita fuori porta. Thanks to these trips, many working-class Italian families had opportunity to see museums, mountains and oceans which they wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise. They couldn’t afford to eat out, so tradition of taking a packed lunch was born.
Nel 7° secolo, al tempo del Rinascimento, l'usanza di dare divenne popolare che il Vaticano lo rese obbligatorio. Le celebrazioni sono state poi assimilate dalla Chiesa cattolica e la data è stata cambiata al 15 agosto quando la Vergine Maria è stata assunta in cielo.
Nel 1920, il governo fascista abbassò i prezzi dei treni per dare alla loro popolazione un regalo dai loro "governanti" (il governo) in modo che potessero fare una gita fuori porta. Grazie a questi viaggi, molte famiglie italiane della classe operaia hanno avuto l'opportunità di vedere musei, montagne e oceani che altrimenti non avrebbero potuto vedere. Non potevano permettersi di mangiare fuori, così è nata la tradizione ‘pranzo al sacco’.
Today, even though Ferragosto is on August 15th, there are many that take two weeks or the whole month of August off and head for the mountains, lakes or oceans. It is time to spend with family and friends and create cherished memories that they will hold until next years vacation. If you are traveling in Italy during August, be prepared for it to be busier than normal as Italians flock to the touristic locations and therefore you will find it hard to find parking, get reservations for dinner and crowded streets. But it truly is a must, once in a lifetime experience.
Arona is no exception. The tourists have flocked to Lago Maggiore and the town is full of life. But not the same as the hustle and bustle we have in America. Here people live life for the moment and the cherished memories and experiences they create. Something us in north America can learn from. Live Life Well Always everyone! Buon Ferragosto!
Oggi, anche se Ferragosto è il 15 agosto, ci sono molti che si prendono due settimane o l'intero mese di agosto e si dirigono verso le montagne, i laghi o gli oceani. È tempo da trascorrere con la famiglia e gli amici e creare ricordi cari che manterranno fino alle vacanze dei prossimi anni. Se viaggi in Italia durante il mese di agosto, preparati ad essere più affollato del normale poiché gli italiani affollano le località turistiche e quindi troverai difficile trovare parcheggio, ottenere prenotazioni per la cena e strade affollate. Ma è davvero un must, una volta nella vita.
Arona non fa eccezione. I turisti sono accorsi sul Lago Maggiore e la città è piena di vita. Ma non è lo stesso del trambusto che abbiamo in America. Qui le persone vivono la vita per il momento e i ricordi e le esperienze care che creano. Qualcosa da cui noi in Nord America possiamo imparare. Vivi bene la vita Sempre a tutti! Buon Ferragosto!
