Living in Italy means most of our family is far away. Not easy for someone who cherishes every moment with loved ones but put into perspective means the moments are even more cherished.
Gianni and I were blessed to have had a month of family mayhem with everyone visiting for Crystal and Chris’ wedding. Why mayhem, well it started a couple of weeks before the family came when Gianni was placed back in hospital for another round of leukemia therapy and I needed to get the house ready for everyone.
So very thankful for technology as Gianni was able to FaceTime and walk me through many things and the day before everyone was to arrive the house was ready to host. Needless to say, I didn’t sleep the night before. At 5am I checked flight schedule for my kids and Rosella arriving from Montreal and my brother’s family arriving from Chicago. They were to have arrived three hours apart however the kids flight was delayed and now they were all arriving at 1pm. How was I going to pick up 15 people with suitcases at the same time….Mayhem!
Vivere in Italia significa che la maggior parte della nostra famiglia è lontana. Non è facile per qualcuno che ama ogni momento con i propri cari, ma messo in prospettiva significa che i momenti sono ancora più preziosi.
Gianni e io abbiamo avuto la fortuna di avere un mese di caos familiare con tutti in visita per il matrimonio di Crystal e Chris. Perché il caos, beh, è iniziato un paio di settimane prima che arrivasse la famiglia quando Gianni è stato rimesso in ospedale per un altro ciclo di terapia per la leucemia e avevo bisogno di preparare la casa per tutti.
Quindi molto grato per la tecnologia come Gianni è stato in grado di FaceTime e guidarmi attraverso molte cose e il giorno prima che tutti arrivassero la casa era pronta per ospitare. Inutile dire che non ho dormito la notte prima. Alle 5 del mattino ho controllato l'orario dei voli per i miei figli e Rosella che arrivavano da Montreal e la famiglia di mio fratello che arrivava da Chicago. Dovevano arrivare a tre ore di distanza, ma il volo dei figli era in ritardo e ora arrivavano tutti alle 13:00. Come devo prendere 15 persone con le valigie allo stesso tempo....caos!
Having checked many shuttle companies, who didn’t have availability, I waited until 7am and messaged our local EXCEPTIONAL rental company Elitcar Rent that we had booked three cars with to see if they could shuttle everyone. Amazingly they found a second driver and everyone got home and train rides were averted. By the way if you ever need rental in Lago Maggiore area this team of people are amazing.
Arona is a small town and the family members that had Airbnb’s had short walks to get to our home. Chris’ mom Gabi, brother Nick and Frieda had arrived a few days earlier so they were already settled in. That night we all had dinner at DELICIOUS Mad Gourmet (an incredible restaurant/pizzeria) and even though everyone was tired from their travels the meal was enjoyed as was the company. The added bonus was everyone got to meet and enjoy our newest family member Ariana Alessia who had just turned 7 weeks that day.
Dopo aver controllato molte compagnie di navette, che non avevano disponibilità, ho aspettato fino alle 7 del mattino e ho inviato un messaggio alla nostra compagnia ECCEZIONALE di noleggio locale Elitcar, che avevamo prenotato tre auto per vedere se potevano prendare tutti. Sorprendentemente hanno trovato un secondo autista e tutti sono tornati a casa e i viaggi in treno sono stati evitati. Se hai mai bisogno di noleggio nella zona del Lago Maggiore, questa team di persone sono incredibile.
Arona è una piccola città e i membri della famiglia che avevano Airbnb hanno fatto brevi passeggiate per raggiungere la nostra casa. La mamma di Chris, Gabi, il fratello Nick e Frieda erano arrivati pochi giorni prima, quindi erano già sistemati. Quella sera abbiamo cenato tutti al il DELIZIOSO Mad Gourmet (un incredibile ristorante/pizzeria) e anche se tutti erano stanchi dai loro viaggi, il pasto è stato apprezzato così come la compagnia. Il vantaggio aggiunto è stato che tutti hanno potuto incontrare e godersi la nostra nuova membra della famiglia Ariana Alessia che aveva appena compiuto 7 settimane quel giorno.
Let me take this time to introduce Ariana or Ari for short to you. A couple of weeks before Gianni got diagnosed, Crystal and Chris had stayed overnight with us in Stresa and Gianni woke up in the morning and said to Crystal “I had a dream you were pregnant”. Crystal quickly said no daddy we are not ready to have a baby yet. Well, she didn’t know she was two weeks pregnant, something she surprised her daddy on July 28th, her birthday, when he got out of the hospital for the first time after 39 days. Permettetemi di presentarvi Ariana o Ari in breve. Un paio di settimane prima che Gianni venisse diagnosticato, Crystal e Chris avevano dormito la notte con noi a Stresa e Gianni si svegliò la mattina e disse a Crystal "Ho avuto un sogno che sei incinta". Crystal ha subito detto no papà non siamo pronti ancora ad avere un bambino. Beh, non sapeva di essere incinta di due settimane, cosa che ha sorpreso suo padre il 28 luglio, quando è uscito dall'ospedale la prima volta dopo 39 giorni. Ariana was happy in her mommy’s tummy and waited until March 10th to make her entrance. The same day her cousin Jameson was born, four years earlier. A connection these two will have the rest of their lives.
Ariana era felice nella pancia della mamma e ha aspettato fino al 10 marzo per fare il suo ingresso. Lo stesso giorno in cui nacque suo cugino Jameson, quattro anni prima. Una connessione che questi due avranno per il resto della loro vita.
We absolutely love our grandsons Brody, Blake, Weston and Jameson and with Ariana now in the mix, I got to see how much they all adore her. Just when we needed a ray of sunshine the little girl miraculously came to be. She is perfect in every way. Loves to eat, sleep, play and poop. She is growing perfectly and we are blessed to have her in our life. Here are some photos of our littlest Ariana and her cousins Brody, Blake, Weston and Jameson.
Amiamo assolutamente i nostri nipoti Brody, Blake, Weston e Jameson e con Ariana ora nel mix, ho avuto modo di vedere quanto tutti la adorano. Proprio quando avevamo bisogno di un raggio di sole, la bambina è miracolosamente venuta alla luce. Lei è perfetta in ogni modo. Ama mangiare, dormire, giocare e fare la cacca. Sta crescendo perfettamente e siamo benedetti ad averla nella nostra vita. Sopra sono alcune foto della nostra piccolo Ariana e dei suoi cugini Brody, Blake, Weston e Jameson.

By Saturday Gianni’s sister Nadja and family arrived from Switzerland, Sean Chris’ friend arrived from Scotland and the youngsters went out on the town. Aperitive and beers as well as many memories had by all. The only person missing was Gianni, but we kept him in the loop with technology by sending lots of pictures and videos. The FaceTime’s were also perfect.
Finally, Monday arrived and with the mayhem of getting the rehearsal dinner ready for 29 people, I had to drive to Novara Hospital of Charity to pick up the father of the bride. I’m sure everyone driving by me was wondering why I had the biggest smile on my face. It was surreal, he was coming home for the wedding and if his numbers were good, he would stay out for the rest of the week and do the therapy at day hospital until the weekend.
He was so ready to come home. That hug and kiss was as if we hadn’t seen each other in years. I miss him when he is in hospital. When we got home the kids had gone to the beach so he had time to settle in while I continued to get things ready for the dinner. Once the kids got home the tears were flowing and the love in the room was intense. Soon we had 29 people scattered all around the house and garden. Thankfully it was a beautiful evening and we had lots of space to accommodate everyone.
Sabato la sorella di Gianni, Nadja, e la famiglia sono arrivati dalla Svizzera, Sean, l'amico di Chris è arrivato dalla Scozia e i giovani sono usciti in città. Aperitivo e birre e tanti recordi avuti da tutti. L'unica persona che mancava era Gianni, ma lo abbiamo tenuto aggiornato con la tecnologia inviando molte foto e video. Anche i FaceTime erano perfetti.
Finalmente, è arrivato il lunedì e con il caos di preparare la cena per 29 persone, ho dovuto guidare fino all'Ospedale della Carità di Novara per prendere il padre della sposa. Sono sicuro che tutti quelli che guidavano vicino a me si chiedevano perché avessi il più grande sorriso sul mio viso. Era surreale, stava tornando a casa per il matrimonio e se i suoi numeri sono buoni, rimane fuori per il resto della settimana e fara la terapia in day hospital fino al fine settimana.
Gianni era così pronto a tornare a casa. Quell'abbraccio e quel bacio erano come se non ci vedevamo da anni. Mi manca quando è in ospedale. Quando siamo tornati a casa i bambini erano andati in spiaggia, quindi ha avuto il tempo di sistemarsi mentre io continuavo a preparare le cose per la cena. Una volta che i bambini sono tornati a casa le lacrime scorrevano e l'amore nella stanza era intenso. Presto abbiamo 29 persone sparse per tutta la casa e il giardino. Per fortuna è una bella serata e abbiamo un sacco di spazio per ospitare tutti.
Gianni drove some people up to the venue hotel as we had booked the whole hotel for two nights and then we went to bed by 10:30 pm as we were going to have a busy day. By 8 am the AMAZING makeup and hair team of Maurizio and Domenico of M&D Art and Make Up arrived and the mayhem started. Crystal, Angela, Sarah and I were all getting makeup and hair done and I was thinking we should have started earlier.

We had to be at the venue by 11:10 am and by 10:30 am I knew we wouldn’t make it. I still didn’t have my hair done and I had to get Crystal into her dress. Stress times one million….Once the dress was on and fitted, I started to calm down. Gianni had washed and flowered up the car and he drove Crystal and baby, while I drove Angela and Sarah. Yes, we were fashionably late.
Gianni ha accompagnato alcune persone fino all'hotel perché avevamo prenotato l'intero hotel per due notti e poi siamo andati a letto entro le 22:30 perché avremmo una giornata impegnativa domani. Alle 8 del mattino è arrivato la SORPRENDENTE team di Maurizio e Domenico di M&D Art and Make Up ed è iniziato il caos. Crystal, Angela, Sarah e io avevamo bisogno di truccarci e pettinarci e pensavo che avremmo dovuto iniziare prima.

Dovevamo essere sul posto entro le 11:10 e alle 10:30 sapevo che non ce l'avremmo fatta. Non avevo ancora fatto i capelli e dovevo ancore mettere il vestito di sposa suo Crystal. Una volta che il vestito era indossato, ho iniziato a calmarmi. Gianni aveva lavato e fiorito la macchina e guidava Crystal e Ariana, mentre io guidavo Angela e Sarah. Sì, eravamo alla moda in ritardo.
The venue was at the UNFORGETABLE Hotel San Carlo, high above Lago Maggiore with the most stunning views. For two days before the wedding, it had rained but today the skies opened up and the view was incredible. Crystal and Chris said their own vows and with Angela and Nick as their witnesses they went to Arona City Hall to get married by Mayor Federico Monti in his private chamber.
The food was incredible and abundant as was the alcohol. Didn’t matter what time of day it was, everyone enjoyed the terrace views, food, drinks, music, and the company. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day for Crystal and Chris. If you are ever in Arona, the restaurant San Carlo is a must do! Here are some photos of that magical day.
La sede era al INDIMENTICABILE l'Hotel San Carlo, in alto sopra il Lago Maggiore con le viste più mozzafiato. Per due giorni prima del matrimonio aveva piovuto ma oggi il cielo si è aperto e la vista era incredibile. Crystal e Chris hanno pronunciato i loro voti nunziali e con Angela e Nick come testimoni sono andati al municipio di Arona per farsi sposare dal sindaco Federico Monti nella sua camera privata.
Il cibo era incredibile e abbondante così come l'alcol. Non importa a che ora del giorno fosse, tutti hanno apprezzato la vista sulla terrazza, il cibo, le bevande, la musica e la compagnia. Non avrei potuto chiedere un giorno più perfetto per Crystal e Chris. Se siete mai ad Arona, il ristorante San Carlo è assolutamente un posto per cibo. Ecco alcune foto di quel magico giorno.

Gianni was able to do his treatments at day hospital for the rest of the week which was great because he got to spend time with the family in the evening. On Saturday morning I brought him back to the hospital to finish his induction phase of therapy. Angela and Steven and their family went traveling for a week and Enzo and family moved into “Scuor Hotel”. When the kids got back Enzo and family went to Varazze until Angela and family went home.
On May 16th, Gianni got the OK to come home after 32 days of arsenic therapy. We didn’t know the results of the bone marrow yet but his bloodwork was good and doctor Lunghi was happy with his progress. We didn’t need to go back until May 25th to determine next steps.
Gianni è stato in grado di fare i suoi trattamenti in day hospital per il resto della settimana, questo era fantastico perché ha avuto modo di trascorrere del tempo con la famiglia la sera. Sabato mattina l'ho riportato in ospedale per finire la sua fase di induzione della terapia. Angela e Steven e la loro famiglia sono andati in viaggio per una settimana e Enzo e la famiglia si sono trasferiti in "Scuor Hotel". Quando i bambini sono tornati Enzo e famiglia sono andati a Varazze fino a quando Angela e famiglia sono tornati a casa.
Il 16 maggio, Gianni ha ottenuto l'ok per tornare a casa dopo 32 giorni di terapia con arsenico. Non sapevamo ancora i risultati del midollo osseo, ma il suo esame del sangue era buono e la dottoressa Lunghi era contento dei suoi progressi. Non abbiamo bisogno di tornare indietro fino al 25 maggio per determinare i prossimi passi.
Kids travels - Viaggi di figli
Steven and family stayed a couple weeks longer and with Gianni out of the hospital we went to visit family in Udine and Prossenicco and Steven and Sarah even had a chance to see an Udinese soccer game. Gianni was able to show them his stomping grounds in Udine which was pretty cool. When we got back, within an hour Steven, Sarah, Crystal and Chris got on a train to Venezia for a few days and Gianni and I had the three little ones.

Thankfully Weston and Jameson were great and baby Ariana slept really well through the night. But basically, those three days, it was just them. Gianni and I couldn’t do anything else and we just loved spending all the time with them. But they too all left on May 27th and we were empty nesters again, but so thankful for the month of mayhem.
Families aren’t perfect and ours I can say is Fiesty, Amazing, Memorable, Intense, Loving and Yay that I have it. Cherish every moment you have with whoever you call your family and live life well always because we only have one. Hugs and kisses from Arona
Steven e famiglia sono rimasti un paio di settimane in più e con Gianni fuori dall'ospedale siamo andati a trovare la famiglia a Udine e Prossenicco e Steven e Sarah hanno anche avuto la possibilità di vedere una partita di calcio dell'Udinese. Gianni ha potuto mostrare loro dove è cresciuto a Udine, questo era bello. Quando siamo tornati ad Arona, nel giro di un'ora Steven, Sarah, Crystal e Chris sono saliti su un treno per Venezia per alcuni giorni e Gianni e io abbiamo avuto i tre piccoli.
Per fortuna Weston e Jameson sono stati fantastici e la piccola Ariana ha dormito molto bene tutta le notte. Ma fondamentalmente, quei tre giorni, erano solo loro. Gianni e io non potevamo fare nient'altro e adoravamo passare tutto il tempo con loro. Ma anche loro se ne sono andati tutti il 27 maggio e noi eravamo di nuovo nidi vuoti, ma così grati per il mese di caos.
Le famiglie non sono perfette e la nostra posso dire che è Fiesty, Incredibile, Memorabile, Intenso, Amorevole e Yay che ce l'ho. Apprezza ogni momento che hai con chiunque tu chiami la tua famiglia e vivi sempre bene la vita perché ne abbiamo solo uno. Baci e abbracci da Arona.
