Easy Salted Caramel Sauce

Makes: About 2 cups

I’ve used bought caramel sauce and added salt to it for other recipes. However I love salted caramel and decided to come up with a recipe I can use. It is very simple recipe and I kick it up a little by adding a little rum.

Ingredients

2 cups sugar

1 cup water

½ cup butter

1cup whip cream

1 tbsp vanilla

1 tbsp rum

Salt to taste (I used ¾ tsp)

Directions

  1. Combine sugar and water in a large sauce pan with a whisk

  2. Cook over medium-low heat until sugar is completely dissolved

  3. Add butter and let it melt Turn heat to medium and keep whisking until mixture boils

  4. Stop whisking and don’t whisk at all during this part to help avoid crystallization

  5. Boil until the mixture turns a deep golden copper color, about 15 - 20 minutes. It may be longer or shorter depending on your stove

  6. Keep an eye on it, but do not stir

  7. If needed, occasionally tip the pan from side to side to help things cook evenly Remove pan from the heat and immediately pour in whipping cream in a slow, steady stream

  8. Whisk quickly as you add the cream. Careful as the caramel will bubble up quite a bit but keep whisking until everything is well combined

  9. Add vanilla, rum and salt to your desired saltiness

  10. Allow the caramel sauce to cool. It will be fairly thin, but will thicken as it cools

  11. Store it in the fridge for up to two weeks
