Christmas Markets – Mercatini di Natale

Europe is well known for its Christmas markets and people travel hundreds of kilometers to visit their favourite markets. This year we went to two markets that were different in every way. The Artigiano in Fiera market in FieraMilano and the Christmas market in Santa Maria Maggiore.

L'Europa è famosa per i suoi mercatini di Natale e le persone percorrono centinaia di chilometri per visitare i loro mercatini preferiti. Quest'anno siamo andati in due mercati diversi sotto ogni punto di vista. Il mercatino Artigiano in Fiera a FieraMilano e il mercatino di Natale a Santa Maria Maggiore.

Artigiano in Fiera

This market is held indoors in the FieraMilano exhibition center which was inaugurated in 2005 and is a complex of over 200,000 square meters indoors and 60,000 outdoors. In 2015, this site hosted Expo 2015. It has 20 pavilions which each can be used independently. For this market 8 pavilions were used for the vendors to sell their products.

This market gets over 1,000,000 visitors in 8 days where they get to see products from more than 2,900 vendors from 100 countries. It definitely was something to see, however we were disappointed that there were little Christmas booths. But if you were looking for handmade china, clothing, jewelry, spices, cheese, salamis, wine, baked goods and so much more, then this is paradise to you.

Entrance to the fair is free, you just have to download a QR code which can be used for the 8 days and there is lots of parking on-site. I’m glad we went, but it was too many people and not the Christmas market we were hoping for.

Artigiano in Fiera

Questo mercato si svolge al coperto nel quartiere fieristico di FieraMilano che è stato inaugurato nel 2005 ed è un complesso di oltre 200.000 metri quadrati coperti e 60.000 all'aperto. Nel 2015 questo sito ha ospitato Expo 2015. Dispone di 20 padiglioni, ognuno dei quali può essere utilizzato in modo indipendente. Per questo mercato sono stati utilizzati 8 padiglioni per i venditori per vendere i loro prodotti.

Questo mercato ottiene oltre 1.000.000 di visitatori in 8 giorni, dove possono vedere i prodotti di oltre 2.900 fornitori provenienti da 100 paesi. Era sicuramente qualcosa da vedere, tuttavia siamo rimasti delusi dal fatto che non ci sono molti stand natalizi. Ma se stavi cercando porcellane fatte a mano, abbigliamento, gioielli, spezie, formaggi, salumi, vino, prodotti da forno e molto altro, allora questo è il paradiso per te.

L'ingresso alla fiera è gratuito, basta scaricare un codice QR che può essere utilizzato per gli 8 giorni e c'è un sacco di parcheggio in loco. Sono contento di essere andato, ma c'era troppa gente e non il mercatino di Natale che speravamo.

Santa Maria Maggiore

This market is about an hour away from Arona in a little mountain town. There is only one road to get in and the line up to get to this market is very long. Luckly, we went early and were able to find parking.

This is what I was expecting in a Christmas market. It is the largest market in the Piedmont region with over 200 booths, outdoors and mostly Christmas hand made items. You could tell how proud the vendors were of their products. They would gladly tell you how they made their items. Here you find items that are made of: knitted, sewn, wood, corn husk, medal, jewels, ceramic, bark, and so much more. There is the occasional cheese and sausage vendor but for the most part it truly is a Christmas market.

There is a Santa village, Christmas tree and as you walk up and down the streets the town is elegantly decorated and is truly a Christmas village. No worries about going hungry as there are many areas that sell food or roasted chestnuts. This was truly a Christmas market and it was wonderful to walk around this beautiful little town.

Santa Maria Maggiore

Questo mercato si trova a circa un'ora di distanza da Arona, in un piccolo paese di montagna. C'è solo una strada per entrare e la fila per arrivare a questo mercato è molto lunga. Per fortuna, siamo andati presto e siamo riusciti a trovare parcheggio.

Questo è quello che mi aspettavo in un mercatino di Natale. E' il mercatino più grande del Piemonte con oltre 200 bancarelle, all'aperto e per lo più artigianali natalizie. Si capiva quanto i venditori fossero orgogliosi dei loro prodotti. Ti direbbero volentieri come hanno realizzato i loro articoli. Qui trovi oggetti fatti di: maglia, cucito, legno, buccia di mais, medaglie, gioielli, ceramica, corteccia e molto altro. C'è il venditore occasionale di formaggio e salsicce, ma per la maggior parte è davvero un mercatino di Natale.

C'è un villaggio di Babbo Natale, un albero di Natale e mentre cammini su e giù per le strade la città è elegantemente decorata ed è davvero un villaggio di Natale. Non preoccuparti di soffrire la fame perché ci sono molte aree che vendono cibo o caldarroste. Questo è stato davvero un mercatino di Natale ed è stato meraviglioso passeggiare per questa bellissima cittadina.
