Walking around Boves you can’t help but notice the old stone fountains. Of course, most don’t work but a few do have water running through them. I’ve been able to find some history on a couple of them but many of them are now just a piece of ancient history that make up the art scene in Boves.
Passeggiando per Boves non si può fare a meno di notare le antiche fontane in pietra. Naturalmente, la maggior parte non funziona, ma alcuni hanno l'acqua che scorre attraverso di loro. Sono riuscito a trovare un po' di storia su un paio di loro, ma molti di loro sono ormai solo un pezzo di storia antica che compone la scena artistica di Boves.
Munie Fountain - Funtana di Munie
The first one I’ve been able to find information on is his one that is across the street of the Saint Clara Monastery and the date on the fountain clearly states it is from 1700 but all the documentation on the internet states it is from 1780. It is called "Funtana di Munie" because it is located in front of the Clarisse Monastery on Corso Bisalta. It is made of stone and was used as a washhouse. Still working over 300 years later. Pretty impressive
La prima su cui sono riuscito a trovare informazioni è quella che si trova dall'altra parte della strada del Monastero di Santa Clara e la data sulla fontana dice chiaramente che è del 1700 ma tutta la documentazione su internet dice che è del 1780. Si chiama "Funtana di Munie" perché si trova di fronte al Monastero delle Clarisse in Corso Bisalta. È fatto di pietra ed era usato come lavatoio. Ancora funzionante oltre 300 anni dopo. Piuttosto impressionante
The coat of arms of Boves is visible from which it is understood that the water from the spring was intended for the community. E' visibile lo stemma di Boves da cui si evince che l'acqua della sorgente era destinata alla comunità.
Elm Tree Square Fountain - Fontana Piazza dell'Olmo
The second fountain is his one in front of St. Bartholomew Church in Piazza dell’Olmo (Elm Tree Square) and is situated above the well of the Ricetto, which were the walls that fortified the nucleus of the city and it dates back to 1514, the Middle Ages and was built by A. Toscano. Every section is sculpted with a design and also has the Boves coat of arms.
In the Statutes (written law passed by a legislative body) of 1571 it states:
“..non lavar panni..né far bere bestiami..Per i contravventori prevista una multa..: chi non era solvibile doveva “stare per tre ore attaccato per il collo della berlina” or translated in English; ..not to wash cloths.. nor to let the cattle drink. For the violators a fine was provided for...: those who were not solvent (didn’t pay the fine) had to "stand for three hours attached by the neck of the berlina". The expression originates from the Middle Ages, when the condemned were exposed to the insults of the crowd on public soil to serve their sentence.
La seconda fontana è quella che si trova di fronte alla Chiesa di San Bartolomeo in Piazza dell'Olmo ed è situata sopra il pozzo del Ricetto, che erano le mura che fortificavano il nucleo della città e risale al 1514, al Medioevo e fu costruito da A. Toscano. Ogni sezione è scolpita con un disegno e presenta anche lo stemma di Boves.
Negli Statuti (legge scritta approvata da un organo legislativo) del 1571 si legge:
“..non lavar panni..né far bere bestiami..Per i contravventori prevista una multa..: chi non era solvibile doveva “stare per tre ore attaccato per il collo della berlina”. L'espressione trae origine dal Medioevo, quando i condannati venivano esposti agli insulti della folla sul suolo pubblico per scontare la loro pena.
Garibaldi Square Fountain - Fontana Piazza Garibaldi
In Garibaldi Square there is this fountain from around 1700. It has two basins that were used as a washhouse and perhaps watering the animals that passed by.
In Piazza Garibaldi si trova questa fontana del 1700 circa. Ha due vasche che servivano come lavatoio e forse come abbeveratoio agli animali che passavano.

These are photos of other fountains I have found in the area but couldn’t find any history about them on the Boves websites. They do however bring character and a place to contemplate what really happened during the time when these were functional. To be a fly in the ointment during those times....
Queste sono foto di altre fontane che ho trovato nella zona ma non sono riuscito a trovare alcuna storia su di esse nei siti web di Boves. Tuttavia, essi conferiscono un carattere e un luogo in cui contemplare ciò che è realmente accaduto nel periodo in cui erano in funzione. Essere una mosca in quei tempi...
